Elkay and the Environment
Elkay Plastics is fully aware of the importance of sustainability and we've added new products to create even more environmentally friendly options for customers. We actively take the following operating measures to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment.
PRODUCTS AND PRACTICES
Controlled-Life Bags (as shown in the video above)
We are proud to announce that many of our high-density carry-out bags, t-shirt bags, and take out bags will now be manufactured with d2w® controlled-life additives. The products manufactured with the new additives will not decompose in landfills since they must be in the presence of oxygen (air) and light to decompose. When exposed to sunlight, heat, moisture and outdoor elements, the new additives will permit the bags to self-destruct over a reasonable period of time (approximately 2 years), while insuring the same strength, high quality, and price of a standard HDPE carry-out bag. The additives function by gradually breaking down the carbon-carbon bonds in the plastic, lowering molecular weight, which gradually weakens material strength and other properties. Exposure to the above-mentioned environmental factors, sunlight, heat, moisture, and outdoor elements triggers the self-destruction process and an increase in any of the factors listed will accelerate breakdown of the bags. Elkay’s bags are safely recyclable with conventional plastics.

Non-Woven Polypropylene Bags:
Elkay has recently introduced Non-Woven Polypropylene (NWPP) bags that are intended to be a reusable alternative to conventional shopping bags. The non-woven bags hold twice as much as general carry-out bags and are far more durable, lasting approximately two years with continuous use. In addition, they are fully washable for reuse and once worn out, are recyclable. Non-woven bags are cost-effective and environmentally friendly, a win-win situation for you and the environment.

In light of the emphasis on reusability in an environmentally conscious marketplace, Elkay has adopted a high density merchandise bag with a thick gauge (between 1.25 to 1.5 mils) for the intended purpose of reuse. At the end of their life cycle, these bags are 100% recyclable with conventional plastic bags.
Post Consumer Resin
Post Consumer Resin (PCR) is resin obtained from any plastic that has entered the stream of commerce, served its intended purpose, and has now been diverted for recycling or export. This includes residential, commercial and institutional plastic, however, does not include industrial scrap material like factory regrind and plant scrap used within the primary manufacturing facility. Once taken to be recycled, used plastic material is melted down and formed into plastic feedstock, commonly known as resin. Post consumer resin is mixed with virgin resin to create a new feedstock for extrusion, resulting in bags with recycled content. Elkay Plastics is proud to use a minimum of 10% post-consumer resin in all of its tarps and high density bags.
Elkay's Tuf-RTM line of products is a concrete example of product source reduction while maintaining the strength and price competitiveness of thicker-gauged comparable products. Tuf-RTM bags are made from a unique blend of linear low density (LLD) resin for added resilience. The new resin mix allows the bags to be of a thinner gauge while still providing the same or better strength and puncture resistance as a standard low density bag of a higher gauge. The motto of this line of products is that you can "do more with less".
- Track water and energy usage
- Use electrical equipment with energy saving features (such as Energy Star®)
- Use lighting controls with occupancy sensors throughout the office and warehouse
- All primary office lighting is provided by energy-efficient T-8 light fixtures
- Use programmable thermostats to control heating and air conditioning
- All water bills are monitored to discover any sudden increases in water usage
- Have installed rain shut-off devices that will shut down the irrigation system during rain
Elkay Plastics endorses and has put into practice a full-fledged recycling program throughout its nationwide operations. In its distribution sites, Elkay recycles all corrugated material and used plastic film. In an effort to reduce the use of paper, all boxes are bar-coded for scanning and orders are processed electronically.
As noted in the green statement, Elkay is a believer in the "three Rs" which are namely reduce, reuse, and recycle; in that specific order. For its employees, Elkay offers conveniently located recycling bins that accept the disposal of paper, plastic bags/film, plastic bottles, cans, and used ink cartridges. Employees are provided paper recycling bins at their desks for easy disposal and are strongly encouraged to bring their own cups and cutlery for reuse. In addition, employees are discouraged from printing e-mails or other literature that can be accessed electronically.
Elkay adheres to best practices in order to minimize waste and pollution. Manufacturing has taken measures to limit carbon and greenhouse gas emissions by installing exhaust filtering systems. Inks used in printing are free of lead as well as any other environmentally harmful substances.
